Broodstock refers to fish that have reached maturity and are being used for breeding. Quality broodstock is the foundation of a breeding program. When selecting a koi for broodstock, its value is determined by lineage.
Famous breeders in Japan have developed some incredible koi varieties, resulting from generations of careful work and dedication to koi breeding. John Clifford went on a koi hunting trip in Japan to acquire males for our breeding program. There he met and learned from the masters themselves.
Oiyagoi (broodstock) that display all the characteristics the breeder intended are rare and costly. These are the same koi top hobbyists desire.
This website features the varieties of koi raised by Cliffords, although only some of our breeding pairs are shown. The koi offered by Cliffords will be 3-12", and we do not intend to sell larger fish. However, we believe the high quality of our selected broodstock is evident, and is a good indication of the quality of their offspring. The majority of our broodstock has been purchased from brokers in the US, and are of reputable Japanese breeding programs.
